If You're Going To San Francisco...

Today we continued our leisurely drive down the coast of California. We started our day at 6 a.m. by jogging outside around Santa Rosa which is way better than running on a treadmill! It took us a while to get out of town but mostly because our GPS was not as smart as we thought. One thing we discovered as we were driving is that sun roofs are rad! Unfortunately, so is sunscreen.
Our first stop was San Francisco, more of a drive by actually, as we didn’t stop anywhere and allof our pictures were taken from within our car. No matter how many times we go to/thru San Francisco, we love seeing the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. The only things missing were the flowers for our hair, which I know I could have convinced Luke to wear.

Our next stop was Santa Cruz, mainly the famed boardwalk which resembles a fair but is cooler since it’s at the ocean. Luke and I are mostly trying to eat well so we made turkey sandwiches before hitting the boardwalk. This was a great idea otherwise we would have stuffed ourselves with deep fried Oreos! As it was, we enjoyed some tasty and expensive soft serve. We didn’t really walk by the ocean since the sand was so hot and our poor Alaskan soles couldn’t tolerate the heat!

Our driving was mostly short today as we decided to do less stops and get to our destination- Monterey! This is my first time here and I love it. Luke did a brief senior class trip here eons ago and felt like the town was even better then he remembered. Monterey is picturesque and quaint and has a great historical section of town which incorporates a modern scene. It has a great feel to it and of course is a coastal town so wherever the ocean is we love! As always, we take about 100 pictures of the same things and only a couple make the cut for public viewing. We love creating our memories and it is fun to look back at our pictures and remember what we were thinking while we were taking them. Luke loves his new camera and we are excited to explore more of the town tomorrow and to capture our favorite moments. (I would like to note that the Steve Madden wedges I am wearing have been in storage since I moved to Alaska; they are still my most favorite shoe ever).

It seems no matter how much we try to branch out with our food experiences, we wind up eating the same things! For dinner we went with Mexican cuisine at a restaurant recommended by our hotel. I was disappointed since it was like Azteca and wasn’t anything new. Hopefully, we will have more interesting and inspiring meals in the future.

To end our evening we went to see a movie. We saw “Midnight in Paris” which is a Woody Allen film. It was not very popular with the so-called critics but we really enjoyed it. We really liked looking at the Paris scenery which we are excited to experience firsthand in October.

As I write Luke is sleeping next to me and I am trying to decide if I should secretly stay up and read “Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins. I say secretly because tomorrow morning Luke is going to drag me from bed at some ungodly hour and I will have to pretend I want to be up. Seriously though, I am only about 50 pages into the book and it is awesome!

Tomorrow we continue down Highway 1 to get the most of the coastal towns! I am sure which ever “Santa” town we stop in next will be a great place to take pictures and get some sun (we’ll be sure to keep Luke’s poor forehead covered.)
